A Few Things We Learned at Girl Scout Camping 2016

My husband and oldest daughter look forward to attending Girl Scout camp. They went for the first time last year and had a blast. He told me to let him know the moment registration was open for next year. It’s a Father – Daughter camp, so only dads attend with the girls. JaMonkey is a “Virtual” Girl Scout because there weren’t any Girl Scout Troops accepting members and I don’t have a spare second to breathe, let alone start a new troop. I wish I did because I remember when I was little My mother was our Troop leader, and she would create such great gatherings for us. It brought me together with some great friends.

Something magical happened during this year’s camp, though. I’m so glad my husband recorded it so that I could watch. During one of the bonfires, there was a talent show that my daughter had missed the sign up for. But my daughter really wanted to participate. So my husband told her that she would need to ask the counselor if she could join in at the last minute. She practiced for hours before it started and watched as countless girls got up to perform for the crowd. She was the second to last girl to go. She stood in front of nearly 200 people and sang a song that she had written and thought up all by herself. My husband said there were tears because he was so proud of how brave she was. When he showed me the video, I cried too. She loves to perform in dance recitals, but this was very different because it was just her out there, not a group of girls. I’m so proud of the young lady she is becoming.

She also seemed to gravitate to the older girls at the camp. Just another reminder that she is growing up so fast. She got to ride a horse again this year which she loves doing.

For crafts this year they made tie-dyed shirts that left their hands looking like a bloody mess. It’s a nice keepsake they can take home, though. They also made candles. She got a chance to do some archery while she was there. I love archery, so it made me a little nostalgic to see this picture. She even found out her natural shooting position.

Her favorite aspect of the trip was this awesome hammock, though. We were sent the SeaTurtle Sports’ Turtle Nest a while ago, but the trees in our yard weren’t close enough, and I didn’t have another way to hang it up, so I sent it with them to camp so they had a comfy place to chill during down time. My husband said that anytime he couldn’t find JaMonkey she was hanging out in the Turtle Nest.

Turtle Nest is highly durable, lightweight and easy to setup.  Comfortable for two people (or 3 up to 400 lbs), all you need to be using the hammock in seconds is a place to attach the included carabiners such as trees, a deck, fence or railing.  My husband wrapped his truck straps around a tree and connected to it that way. It compresses to the size of a softball and fits into the attached pouch, which doubles as a drink holder or a place to store other gear while the hammock is in use. My husband loved that feature.

Girl Scout camp was another huge hit and my husband is already counting down the days until next year because he gets to take both girls with him!
