Six Reasons to Consider Summer Camp for Kids
When school’s over and your child is home for the summertime, you may be wondering how you will keep them entertained and active for the next three months. A great way to keep kids busy – and give them a life-shaping experience – is an overnight camp. Not convinced? Read on to discover six of the benefits of summer camp for kids.
- 1. Gain independence. Once your child experiences a summer away at camp, they will be accustomed to doing things on their own – without parental assistance. They may be responsible for things like making their beds, keeping the cabins clean and juggling a camp schedule. These small steps can help your child grow into an independent person, and you may notice the positive outcomes once they return home.
- 2. Improve social skills and meet new people. When your little one goes away, they will be around many new people. This is an ideal opportunity for them to practice their people skills and interact with children who may be different from them. Plus, they can make new friends outside of school and home.
- 3. Develop an appreciation for nature. Being outdoors for the summer will give your children an opportunity to have fun outside and experience nature – sans cellphones, laptops and video games. Plus, the hiatus from electronics may encourage them to cut back after camp is over.
- 4. Learn new skills. Summer camps for kids are packed with fun and unique activities – many of which your little one may have never tried before. From sand volleyball to new crafts, campers will be exposed to a variety of new hobbies. Your child may discover a love for a certain sport or craft to continue during the school year.
- 5. Get active. At most camps, your child will not be sitting on a couch watching television or playing video games. Instead, they will be playing outside, exploring nature and staying active. It’s a great way to start good exercise habits and encourage your child to embrace the outdoors.
- 6. Appreciate home. There may be times when kids are a bit homesick, but being away will help them be grateful for the comforts of home. They may realize how delicious your home-cooked meals are – or how nice it is to have their clothes washed for them. Regardless of what they miss, time away can help them appreciate all of the extra things you do for them.
While it may be difficult to have your child away for the summertime, you now know how they can benefit from their time at summer camp. Before you pack up the car, make sure you both are protected with a car insurance policy. Check out affordable auto insurance quotes to find an option that meets your needs. And don’t forget to pack the tissues for your drive home.

My kids always enjoy summer camp, and since we homeschool I like having them out of the house once in a while!
I always wanted to attend summer camp when I was a kid, but it wasn’t too popular where I grew up. Sure, we had camps, but no one went away for several weeks. I know my daughter would love a week-long summer camp but not my 8 year old.
Summer camp can be really fun.
My kids love going to summer camp!
These are great reasons.
I am hoping to get my kids in summer camp eventually. I never got a chance to go. I am hoping they get a chance to experience it.
Here in the city summer camp is a must. My son gets to explore great activities in the country and I get to sort through everything I collected all year form blogging!
thanks for this!

All of the kids went to 4-H camp this year and it was a great experience for them.
I always liked summer camp as long as I could take a friend with me. We only stayed a week though. That was probably the best week out of our parents’ year! LOL
I was late in signing up and all the camps were full. I was so disappointed.
I never particularly liked summer camp as a kid, but I can say that I still have friends now 30 years later that I made at camp, so I totally agree with the 2nd point.
We are hoping next year to find my son a great summer camp.
