This year I surprised my daughter, whom this blog is named after, for her 8th birthday. It started the day before her birthday when her Dad visited her school with a few boxes of Munchkins and his Superman shirt complete with the cap attached. They ate lunch together and shared the donuts with her class.
The next morning was the big surprise; she had no idea what the plan was for her birthday. I have been planning this trip for most of the year. I knew I wanted to go to Disney, and it just so happened that her birthday fell on a special event day at the parks. The Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party! So I bought her a special MagicBand with princesses on it and placed it in a box along with the booklet that Disney sends that says we were going to Walt Disney World.
We packed everything up and loaded the cars the night before so that when we woke up we could just hit the road. We went into her room early that morning around the same time she normally gets up and ready for school to give her the gift. Check out the video of what happened at the bottom of this post.
It wasn’t quite the reaction I was hoping for, but she was still exhausted and wasn’t full comprehending it that early. What was even funnier (unfortunately I didn’t catch it on camera) was after we told her we were leaving right then for Walt Disney World she asked if she could go to the bathroom first.
So we hit the road for Orlando and got to the Omni Orlando Resort right one time so that we could unload our belongings and freshen up before hitting the Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party right when it opened at 4 pm. The first thing we did when we got there grabbed a birthday button from one of the stores. A Happy Birthday button is must if you are celebrating at the parks. Cast members and characters pay special attention and go out of their way to tell the birthday girl Happy Birthday.
Then we started hitting up every Photopass location we could find to get some pictures together and of the birthday girl. We took in the Move It and Shake It dance party before heading to our special birthday dinner. I tried all year to get a table to Be Our Guest restaurant, but everything booked up so fast. I even tried one of those services that watch for openings but had no luck. A few of my friends that go every year to Disney gave me hope and told me to try the week of our trip when people were changing their plans and canceling trips. I spent a whole day refreshing the reservation page and after 5 canceled reservations at any restaurant that would take us, the skies opened up and said, “Let there be an epic birthday dinner,” and I nailed a 5:30 pm dinner reservation at Be Our Guest! I was in tears when I finally got our names in.
So we had dinner in Belle and Beasts castle. They even wrote a special birthday card for her and brought out a plate of the Grey Stuff with a candle in it for us to sing Happy Birthday to her. Then we all picked one of everything from the dessert cart and tried each others treats.
Now it was time to check out MVMCP, so we headed back towards the front of the park to check out the shows, parade, and fireworks. We had a little time to kill so we visited Club Tinsel to dance with Phineas and Ferb. At this point my toddler was in complete meltdown mode. She was woken up early to jump in the car and then never took a nap, so she was running on bribes at this point. But once we got to Club Tinsel, all that ended and she got crunk dancing around with the characters. I had to drag both of them out with promises of more great things to see otherwise they would have danced the night away in there.
We sat down near the giant Christmas tree because it has the BEST view of the Christmas parade. You get the Frozen icicle covered castle, and the parade walks towards you while snow falls on Main Street. The highlight of her evening was when Cinderella and Santa Claus wished her a Happy Birthday during the parade. Talk about making her feel extra special.
After the fireworks, we visited a few characters to take some pictures, and then I let her pick out whatever she wanted from the souvenir shops. She decided on a Marie kitty plush toy.
After my husband was thoroughly at his wits end with me for pushing all of us to be awake from 6 am to 10:30 pm, he made me leave the Magic Kingdom. We went back to our resort and all crashed upon arrival.
And that was only day one of the epic birthday celebration. Read day 2 of our adventure.
