Looking for some happy haunts to make your family game night more interesting? The Disney Haunted Mansion Call of the Spirits game has just the ghosts you’re looking for family game night. Just beware of Hitchhiking Ghosts; they might stick around.
Just in time for Halloween, a new board game from Funko Games is now available for purchase.
We received Disney Haunted Mansion – Call of the Spirits Game to review, and our family really loved playing together. The game is recommended for ages 8 or 9, and our youngest (8 years old) really enjoyed playing.
How to play Disney Haunted Mansion – Call of the Spirits Game
Don’t let the Haunted Mansion instructions scare you into an early grave. They seem hard to grasp, but the helpful how-to video that Nerdist did breaks down the gameplay beautifully.
Once you realize that there are two gameplay phases, event, and action phase, you realize that it’s just about taking your actions to earn the most ghosts. Here is the video to help you get an idea of how to play.
One of the things I really liked about the game is how it utilizes the characters from Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride and incorporates them into the game. Aside from the Hitchhiking Ghosts, the dancing party guests, and my favorite character, Constance, the black widow bride made an appearance as well. The game’s object is to collect ghosts, and sometimes it takes strategy to gather multiple cards of the same category. We also discovered that sometimes having multiples of the same category isn’t always good. We had a couple of cards cancel themselves out!
While you’re playing, you’ll also have some happy haunts that want to go home with you. This little tidbit from the game caused me to lose my winning spot when we calculated our scores at the end of the game. The player with the most haunts has to discard some of their ghost cards, lowering their final score.
Another fun aspect of the game is the chance to steal ghost cards from your opponents. My oldest used the duel to steal my Stretching Room ghosts to match the ones she had and earn her more points. Honestly, I think this move is what won her the game. It boasted her score a lot!
All of your favorite rooms of the Haunted Mansion are located on the board, including the endless hallway. This is the way you travel from room to room in the game. You never leave the endless hallway or the center seance room where Madame Leota hangs out.
The game took about an hour to play the first time because we had to keep referring to the directions, but the second time around, it went a lot faster, and gameplay runs around 30 minutes. You can play with 2-6 players.
Disney Haunted Mansion – Call of the Spirits Game is available now on Amazon. For Disney fans, you don’t have to wait for Halloween to play this game. We will be playing all year round. “Hurry back now, don’t forget your death certificates!”
