I’ve always been fascinated by the Mexican holiday of Día de Muertos. This beautiful holiday of remembering friends and family of those that have passed is brought to life by the alters and offerings that the family brings to the dead. We have a local Day of the Dead festival here in Atlanta, and local Mexican families build amazing alters for their family and friends and display them for all to see. It is a historical glimpse into another culture. We try to go every year now because it is so amazing. That’s another reason I am so excited about the upcoming Disney•Pixar’s Coco hitting theaters this Thanksgiving.
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.

It is a colorful masterpiece about family, tradition, and music. I recently saw a clip from the movie at D23 Expo, and I instantly fell in love. Miguel’s drive to do what he loves is a powerful message. I can’t wait to see the rest of his adventure. You can get excited about the movie too with these fun printables! There are coloring pages, a maze, and a hexaflexagon.
