Equipment

  • Unfinished wood sign
  • White matte paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Ruler
  • Black sharpie
  • Wire pine stems pipe cleaners
  • Thick wired ribbon
  • Printer

Instructions

  • Gather your supplies.
  • Begin to paint the front of the unfinished sign. It is best to use matte paint. However, this may require 2-3 coats. Allow 24-48 hours for the paint to completely dry.
*NOTE: Use masking or painter's tape if needed to protect the inside edges of the frame from paint.
  • Once completely dry, create faux shiplap lines using a ruler or straightedge and a sharpie. Depending on the size of the sign, determine how many planks are needed and measure the inside of the size minus the frame and divide by the number of planks to space evenly.
  • Create a template in any document program of the word “merry” or other short phrase using a sans serif font for the next step when shaping the wired tree stems. Then print.
*NOTE: Sizing of each letter on the template will depend on personal choice and size of the pre-made sign. For reference, for this 11 3/4 x 1815/16” sign letters are approx. 3.5” tall.
  • Using the template created, shape the wired pine stems along the lines of each letter. The template keeps the letters consistent and aligned.
  • Line the letters on the sign. When happy with placement hot glue pine letters.
  • Attach a ribbon to your sign.
