These do-it-yourself flower crowns were inspired by the upcoming movie, Ferdinand and his love for flowers!
If you follow me on Snapchat or Instagram you may know that I am slightly obsessed with flower crowns. I would wear them all the time if I could. Instead, I settle for a good filter to make that happen. In celebration of the new Ferdinand movie coming out, I decided to make some Spanish inspired flower crowns for the girls.
This project is really simple and your crowns can be made for under $5! I bought everything at the dollar store. Here is what you will need:
- Silk flowers, assorted
- Floral wire
- Floral tape
I wanted to focus on flowers that would be the focus of the Ferdinand film and its Spanish culture, so I found red carnations and then picked colors and flowers that would be a great fit together. The first thing I did was glue the heads of the flowers onto the stems. If you’ve ever worked with silk flowers you’ll see that they pop off pretty easily. This will prevent that from happening.
Start by measuring your child’s head. Then cut the wire with a little bit of overhang. I suggest gluing the ends with hot glue or some type of glue before wrapping it with floral tape. My kids pulled it apart and that is how I had to repair it. Trial and error! Cut your silk flowers so that they have a longer stem. I like to keep some of the leaves on the flowers to give it more pops or color. I slid the leaves up on the red carnations. The stems have wire in them making them easier to wrap around and hold their shape. Don’t worry if your crown bends, it will all be wrapped at the end.
Keep placing your flowers around the crown until you have them all where you want. You can even wrap them around the entire crown if you like. We were just trying to do a top of the head crown that was more of a headband rather than a full crown. If you do decide to do a full crown I suggest breaking out the glue gun because wrapping it in floral tape will be a little more challenging. You can still do it but having the stems glued down will save you some frustration.
Now wrap the crown with floral tape to secure the stems into place and prevent them from stabbing you in the head!
The girls loved having their own flower crowns and can’t wait to wear them to the Ferdinand movie!
Ferdinand is in theaters December 15th, 2017!
