The goal of Georgia Tech’s Earth Day Celebration is to focus attention on the environment and increase people’s awareness of the world around them. The event is free, open to the public, features over 70 exhibitors and includes eco-friendly giveaways, recycling opportunities, a clothing swap, an office supply exchange, live music, and organic popcorn. The City of Decatur, in partnership with the Wylde Center, will be holding its annual Decatur Earth Day Festival (DEDF) on Saturday, April 19, 2014, 1-4 p.m. at the Oakhurst Garden at the corner of Oakview and South McDonough, Decatur. This celebration of Earth Day is Pirate themed and is a fun and festive way for more than 400 members of the community to come together and pARRRticipate in celebrating the 45th Anniversary of Earth Day at the city’s OFFICIAL EARTH DAY PARTY. Show your support and like our Facebook Page. The celebration will kick off with a pirate led pARRRade that will go from Harmony Park to the Oakhurst GARRRden site, beginning at 12:30 pm. We have an exciting array of events planned for children, youth and adults and include, for example:
- Costume Parade led by the Funk Pirates at 12:30pm
- FREE ARRRTS & Crafts for Kids
- Over 40 Vendors
- LIVE Music
- Special Earth Day T-shirt contest
- World Famous Cake Contest (pirated themed of course)
- And MORE!
Lots of Fun for the Kids
Kids will enjoy the ARRRTS & crafts, scavenger hunts, and festive pirate performers. A pirate ship will be parked in front of the garden and live birds of prey will be on hand to interact with.

Book signing in the Zoo Atlanta Trading Company Gift Shop: Zoo Atlanta is pleased to welcome Diana M. Hawkins, author of “Shadows along the Zambezi,” a romantic suspense novel centered on the story of two elephant conservationists pitted against poachers, ivory traffickers and government officials in crisis-stricken Zimbabwe in 2008. Ms. Hawkins, who is also the author of the children’s book “Lumpy the Elephant,” will be on hand to sign copies of “Shadows along the Zambezi” in the Zoo Atlanta Trading Company Gift Shop.

Georgia Aquarium is dedicated to conservation efforts and protecting the earth and the waters of our world. We’re celebrating Earth Day as part of Party for the Planet!

- Learn about sustainable palm oil and play our grocery game
- Our Recycle Match Game will teach you what goes in the trash and what goes in the recycle bin
- Test your knowledge of the similarities and differences of the most diverse ecosystems in the world at “Rainforest vs. Coral Reef”
- Try our hands on “River Clean Up” and learn how an animal might mistake litter for food
- Coloring and crafts
- Learn how you can help beluga whales in our Caring Together Plinko Game
- The Home Depot Kids Workshop
These events are meant to help protect the beauty of aquatic wildlife, share the power of nature’s stories and inspire commitment for generations to come. We hope that you can join us at one or more of our “Parties for the Planet” this summer!
