One little sentence sparked an outcry from Women all over America this week. On Wednesday night, Hilary Rosen, a CNN commentator had this to say:
“What you have is Mitt Romney running around the country, saying, ‘Well, you know, my wife tells me that what women really care about are economic issues, and when I listen to my wife, that’s what I’m hearing.’ Guess what? His wife has actually never worked a day in her life,” Rosen said.
“She’s never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing, in terms of how do we feed our kids, how do we send them to school, and why do we worry about their future,” Rosen continued, adding that Romney “just seems so old fashioned when it comes to women.”
Romney’s team leaped into action sending out and email with the subject line reading, “If you’re a stay-at-home mom,” the missive read, “the Democrats have a message for you: you’ve never worked a day in your life.”
Michelle Obama Tweeted her support. “Every mother works hard, and every woman deserves to be respected. –mo”
Of course Sarah Palin jumped into the conversation explaining that Rosen has “Awakened the Mama Grizzles.” Also pointing out that the same comments were reversed when talking about Palin’s decision to work instead of staying home with her children.
So I’d love to hear your thoughts on these comments. As a Stay at Home Mother I know that it’s a hard job but I also see what Rosen was getting at. It wasn’t an issue about Women but an issue about class levels. An Romney hasn’t had to “work a day in her life” not only because she choose to be home with her children. But because Mitt Romney had PLENTY of money to support it.
