When it comes to reboots, this is the one we’ve all been waiting for, the return of Fraggle Rock. For the 80s and 90s kids, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock brings back fond memories of the classic Jim Hensen show with a modern upgrade. To celebrate, I was so excited to have a little chat with a few of the Fraggles, Wembley and Mokey.
Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock is now streaming on Apple TV+.
From the very first episode, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock captures the magic that made the show special with friendship, catching songs, and exploring the world through new eyes. High-definition cameras and TVs with more pixels make the Fraggles a colorful sight. The Doozers have been hard at work making The Rock fresh and bright for the next generation. The show makes some new changes to the Outer Space world where the Silly Creatures live. The old inventor is now a young woman (Lilli Cooper) working on her doctorate in marine biology while sharing her activism to clean up the ocean and the climate crisis on her YouTube channel. These are all important messages that many kids and their parents are passionate about.
Back to the Rock showrunners Alex Cuthbertson and Matt Fusfeld are known for their New Girl and Community credits. You know the show is in good hands when the show is executive produced by The Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford, and longtime Henson collaborator John Tartaglia. Seeing some of the original puppeteers return also helps! Karen Prell returns as Red and serves as Co-Executive Producer, and Dave Goelz returns as Boober. Kevin Clash (Elmo) makes a special appearance as Uncle Traveling Matt. 
The show isn’t really a continuation of the previous show but more like a true reboot of the core story of Uncle Traveling Matt leaving Fraggle Rock to explore Outer Space and sending back messages and packages for Gobo through the portal. We still see the Gorg family and their garden, which is also the home of Marjory the Trash Heap and her faithful rat duo, Philo and Gunge.
New additions also include new Fraggles and Doozers voiced by special guest stars Patti LaBelle, Cynthia Erivo, Daveed Diggs, Ed Helms, Kenan Thompson, as well as an appearance by Foo Fighters.
Even if your kids are too old to watch, do yourself a favor and at least watch the Pilot. You’ll be transported to your youth the moment Dance Your Cares Away comes on.
