Maya and the Three is another Jorge Gutieìrrez masterpiece, with a strong story rooted in Mesoamerican folklore. The characters he showcases have flaws and challenges that they must overcome to defeat the Gods. Gutieìrrez uses a cinematic approach to the limited series and uses letterboxing on the frame that the characters occasionally break through. This gives it a view style unlike any other. You only notice subtle breaks in the letterboxing during each episode, but by the final chapter, the characters are bursting through in an almost 3-dimensional fashion. It really makes watching the show a true adventure.
Beyond the unique creative choices and fascinating animation style, the story of Maya and the Three really ropes you in and keeps you engaged. It has strong female leads and a phenomenal cast.
Zoe Saldana plays Maya, a sassy and strong Teca warrior princess that wants to find her purpose and fulfill her destiny. She was often overshadowed by her three brothers, the Jaguar Triplets, voiced by Gael Garcia Bernal.
You don’t want to miss this incredible limited series, now streaming on Netflix.
Are there only trading cards for the Gods and the bad guys or are there ones for Maya and her family?
