Quirky Ways to De-stress

We all have those things that we do that seem strange to others but are entirely normal to us. Maybe you dance around your kitchen while you make dinner, or lay upside down on your couch when you need to think of an idea. These things may seem strange and quirky, but for many people, this is normal life. We can be normal and quirky at the same time, and there are many quirky ways to de-stress.

For example, have you ever just laid on the floor in the middle of your living room? If you answered no, I urge you to go try it right now. Lay in the middle of a room, flat on your back or stomach for three minutes with your eyes closed.

Go ahead, I’ll wait.

How do you feel right now? Did doing that give you a little burst of energy when you got up? Do you feel refreshed? Did it feel weird? Good! Sometimes doing something out of the ordinary is all it takes to refresh yourself and de-stress.

Many adults practice the art of coloring with crayons in coloring books. I own a few, and yes, I like my crayons not broken. (The kids have their own crayons, mine stay hidden!) There are Adult Coloring Books as well. It’s been proving that coloring is relaxing to the body. While it may take you back to your childhood, it’s an inexpensive and quick way to de-stress from a crazy day.

Fake a smile and literally laugh out loud at yourself. There is evidence proving that a smile is contagious, even if you force yourself to do it in front of the mirror. Smiling in any way will make you happier, less stressed and can actually improve your mood. There is such thing as laughing exercise where people get together and laugh in different ways. They force the laughs at the beginning, but talk to anyone who has done it, it’s crazy refreshing for your body!

Go for a run. No, you don’t need to sweat, you don’t need to be in workout clothes, and yes you can do it at work. Go for a light jog around the block at lunch. You might feel odd, look odd, and think what am I doing, but exercise is a proven de-stressor. It might be quirky to do this at work in regular clothes, but that’s okay!

Embrace your quirky-ness and maybe some colleagues will join you after they see how happy you are the rest of the day! If you aren’t into running around the block you could also march in place, go up and down the stairs a few times, do some jumping jacks, or crunches.
