I finally get to break out my new ice cream maker and make a yummy treat that is one of my favorites. Raspberry dark chocolate swirl ice cream! Vanilla Ice cream swirls together with dark chocolate chunks and raspberry sauce. I’ve partnered with ALDI to show you how you can save money on your groceries, including organic ones.
ALDI is always my first stop because you can’t beat their prices. You can save up to 50% on your grocery bill! The best part is that they offer organic options with their SimplyNature line. It’s my favorite because not only are there organic options, but they are free from artificial colors, flavors or enhancers. Some of the produce is locally sourced which helps our local economy. Even everyday items that I buy like the raspberries for this recipe are less expensive at ALDI even though they are the exact same brand!
ALDI Total = $9.72 | Other Total = $13.41 |
Friendly Farms Organic Whole Milk – $2.95 | Horizon Organic Whole Milk – $4.69 |
Heavy Whipping Cream – $1.69 | Heavy Whipping Cream – $3.99 |
Dark Chocolate – $1.69 | Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Bar – $1.25 |
Organic Raspberries – $3.39 | Organic Raspberries – $3.48 |
Some of my other favorite ALDI Brands that I use to help with my goals are Fit & Active, which is designed to be better for you, livingGfree is the ALDI gluten free line, and Never Any! The meat line with no antibiotics, hormones, and animal by-products. My girls love coming with me to ALDI because we are in and out with ease because most stores only have 4 to 5 aisles. They help me bag our groceries too at the end. Bagging your own groceries and a coin operated cart borrowing system are just a few of the ways that ALDI cuts back on costs.
They love helping me in the kitchen also. Making this ice cream was fun. They love watching it turn the whole time and asking, “Is it done yet?” That would be the only downside to making ice cream. It feels like it takes forever! To help yourself prepare, make sure that everything is cold before you begin. The Ice cream maker needs to be frozen. Place any bowls and containers in the freezer as well. Your mixtures need to be cooled before they go into the ice cream maker or they won’t churn to the consistency that you need.
Start by making the raspberry sauce. Place your raspberries and sugar into a saucepan and heat while mashing the raspberries. Strain out the seeds and chill until needed. In another sauce pan, heat until it starts to bubble the heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Heating helps to dissolve the sugar and salt. You don’t necessarily have to do this step but if you don’t your ice cream could taste grainy. It’s much smoother if you dissolve everything first.
Transfer the vanilla ice cream base into a bowl or large glass to place in the refrigerator to cool completely. Once the mix is cool, you can make your ice cream. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions from your ice cream maker. Mine took about 20 minutes to get to a soft serve consistency. While it was churning, I chopped up my bar of dark chocolate into small bits. You’ll want to wait until the very last minute to put in any mix in’s. If you put them in too early, they just sink to the bottom and can mess up the whole process. Add in a little at a time so that it properly mixes and blends the chocolate chunks throughout.
Next, get your (already frozen) ice cream container out and scoop the ice cream into it. Then take your raspberry sauce and spoon some on top of the ice cream. Then slowly swirl the two together. I mixed the raspberry sauce in stages so that it would swirl instead of blend. I then added a little more to the top to finish it off. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer for an additional 3-5 hours until it is completely frozen solid.
“More waiting! Ugh, I just want to eat it already!”
Worth the wait, in every way! Garnish with some fresh raspberries and any dark chocolate you have left over.
Make sure to stop into your local ALDI and see how you can save on your grocery bill.
