If you haven't heard the news yet Google announced that they will be doing a lot of “Spring Cleaning” that includes some things like Gears, Wave and a bloggers best friend…Google Friend Connect. But this is a great move into a new direction because it will drive traffic to the newly announced Google + Pages.
Have no fear though. If you can't live without Google Friend Connect about half of us will be safe…the half using Blogger as your platform. The rest of us however on all the other sites like myself on WordPress are forced to….OH NO….start all over. GFC ends on March 1, 2012.
Honestly, I'm completely fine with this and I'll tell you why. Google + Pages is a huge step up from Google Friend Connect. Yes people can subscribe to your site but they can still do this with their favorite RSS readers so you aren't loosing the
avid readers. Google +Pages is really just a Google version of a Facebook page but did you know that Google + has some of the best SEO you can ask for? Facebook doesn't allow search engines to source it's content the way Google + does.
Hopefully by now you have your own Google + Profile Page with your Google Account. Just login and click the You+buttonSo if you are ready to make the switch here are some steps to create your new Google + Page and a nifty badge to place on your blog so that people can start to follow.
After you login just visit the Create a Business Page where you will get to choose a category for your page. If you are a simple blog you'll find Blog under Arts, Entertainment, or Sports. After finishing this page you are done. It's that simple.
Now you'll want to add a badge to your blog so that you can get those followers built back up.
Google also makes this very easy. Just visit this link . You will need to locate your Page ID number which you'll find in the address bar.
Google will then create your code by the standards you chose to style it. Then you'll post your code where ever you like on your site. I have mine at the bottom in the footer. It looks like this.
Super easy to do so start building your Google + Pages! Make sure you are adding them to your giveaways so that people follow you in every way possible! Shouldn't be long before you are reaching the same numbers (if not better) than your Google Friend Connect count.
