Need some Valentine’s super fast like Sonic? I got you covered like Dr. Robotnik and his drones.

Sonic the Hedgehog is in theaters February 14th!

Alright Sonic fans (I’m talking to you parents), grab your kids, and relive the nostalgia of this classic Sega game. First, let me start by saying that the visual effects team on this movie seriously got their act together when it came to redoing Sonic’s entire being after the backlash from fans when the first trailer released. I was taken back by his very strange appearance. They got it right, though. (Heavy sigh of relief).

The girls didn’t know much about Sonic going into the movie other than the fact it was based on a video game. Luckily the movie gives viewers a little history or an origin story if you will of how and what Sonic the Hedgehog is.  They did a great job of teaching the audience about Sonic’s roots to give his story more context.

Aside from Sonic himself, the visual effects in the movie are pretty great. Sonic’s lightning and Dr. Robotnik’s drones and various machines were crazy cool.

Sonic the Hedgehog does a great job of keeping it’s PG rating in check. There are a few “hella,” hell, and a “son of a” that cuts off before it turns into a bad word.

One of the things I loved about the movie is the amazing relationship between Tika Sumpter and James Marsden’s characters. They showcase such a wonderful relationship that bends and makes hard choices when it needs to.

I think when it comes to Dr. Robotnik, Jim Carrey was a perfect choice. His over the top goofy acting is something that really resonates with kids. I’ve enjoyed his silly scenes since he was a cast member on In Living Color (I’m showing my age), and it reminds me of Robin Williams. He’s over the top in a way that makes you belly laugh. There are times that they take the joke too far, and it borderlines into “ok we get it” territory, but kids eat that stuff up.

Sonic the Hedgehog End Credit Scene

Does Sonic have an end credit scene? Yes, well, a mid-credit scene. I won’t spoil what the scene is, but make sure you stick around after the primary “big” credits roll, you won’t regret it. There isn’t a scene at the very end of the credits, though, so you can head home after you hear all the parents cheering!

I hope they expand the Sonic the Hedgehog universe more. There are so many great characters they can include in the series.

  1. […] Tom and Jerry have been making fans laugh since 1940, and they continue to do so in the latest movie adaptation. Director Tim Story does a great job at holding on to the roots of the characters and their epic fight scenes while sprinkling in a more modern story. Story’s approach of keeping the animals as close to their 2D originals as possible offers a new way to look at animation and live-action crossovers similar to ones we’ve seen recently, like Sonic the Hedgehog.
