I sat down with Tara Strong (legendary voice actor) to talk about the upcoming season of Gabby’s Dollhouse and what she would love to voice in the future, throat remedies, and so much more.
Tara has had a very successful voice-over career, including the recent “Loki” (Miss Minutes), “Fairly OddParents” (Timmy Turner), “Rugrats” (Dil Pickles), as well as shows “Teen Titans,” “Batgirl,” “Family Guy,” “Ben 10,” and “Spirited Away.” She is Miss Collins on Nickelodeon’s “Big Time Rush” and the current voice of “Harley Quinn.

Hey Tara, I’m Meghan from jamonkey.com thank you so much for joining us to talk about Gabby’s Dollhouse. Your voice acting has been a staple in my life since I was a kid with like Rugrats and the Powerpuff Girls. So this is very exciting. So do you enjoy roles that also allow you to sing similar to Kitty Fairy? And why is it that the Garden Magic song is just so catchy?
Tara Strong
You’re so right. It’s like the best song. I have a girlfriend that’s like, Oh my God, we listened to your song. Like every day in the car. My kids are obsessed and like What song? They said garden magic, I don’t even know like it was on iTunes. And I played it. I’m like, this is really good. It’s really addictive. And it’s really cute and catchy. It’s one thing I really want to give kudos to all the people that work on the music on this show, because it’s very easy to choose something simplistic or founded. And when you have a show, that’s basically for a younger audience, they could get away with doing a cute little ditty, but they really work hard on the musicality. And I think the songs are very well written. I think they’re smart. I think they’re catchy. I think they’re sweet. I think they’re melodically interesting. And I love to sing Yes, it’s like my favorite thing to do to sing in character. And anytime I get to I just, I get really, really excited and you know, typically on Gabby’s will get the songs a couple days in advance, and it was always a delight of listening to like, Oh, that’s cute. That’s cute. This is cute. And then like, Wait, do I get to sing all that? Like, no, you just get to sing that one line, like, Oh, that’s really cute, but the music’s very cute.

So you’ve voiced hundreds of titles from shows within mega fandoms like DC and Marvel and my little pony. So who is the character you would love the chance to voice in the future?
Tara Strong
Oh, love to voice in the future? Well, for sure, I would love to voice Gabby’s dollhouse for the next 20 years. So that’s like, you know, near future, a character that I haven’t done before. Hmm. It’d be fun to be like a new regular character, like on The Simpsons or something like that, because I’ve never done that. And then I do think there needs to be a Gabby’s dollhouse Broadway show, and I need to be in it.
Meghan C.
That would be great. So some of your voice roles can be very taxing like kitty fairy and Harley Quinn, where you kind of overexert yourself. So as a voice actor, and a Mom, what are some of the comras home remedies that you use to kind of like soothe your voice when it’s just you’ve worked way too much?
Tara Strong
Um, well, truthfully, um, the voice work on Gabby’s isn’t too vocally taxing. However, as always, I protect my voice because it’s a muscle and it’s what I use for my work every single day. So I don’t abuse it. I never smoke. I don’t have dairy. I don’t go to concert and scream. I take singing lessons and regularly work this muscle and if I have to sing that day on a show, I’ll warm up my voice. And the other thing I do is when I have a session I always stay hydrated. And I’m like a weirdo. I like to have three different drinks with me Actually, I think I have it now I do. I have my three right now you want to see I like to have a hot drink. So this is like an oat milk latte. I like to have water so I’ve got like my flow water. Hopefully one of these people will sponsor me and I like to have something sparkly so I like zevia because it’s a soda without aspartame. So I have those three things that if I’m in the mood for something to feel hydrated or spunky, or whatever I I like to stay

at all times. I get very cranky if I’m missing one of the three.

If you could take attributes from each of the fate of your favorite characters that you voiced over the time. What would they be and from which characters?
Tara Strong
Hmm, well, I’m definitely like mama bear. Mama box because I constantly do arts and crafts with my kids. I’m definitely like kitty fairy because I love singing and I love nature and I love magic ritual. So that’s really fun. A lot like bubbles because I’m adorable. But if you piss me off, I can be pretty hardcore. I’m definitely like Raven, because I need my alone time. And I also like to meditate. And I also just really like her because she’s really cool. I also love Harley because she’s a woman who has found her own power and just is this Phoenix Rising which I see for myself and so many of my sisters so I really kind of dig that. I’d say that’s probably the ones I’m most like although the similarity I have with Twilight, I don’t I don’t really read as much as I should and I beat myself up for that. But I am a human that likes to make sure everyone’s okay and make sure all the friends are getting along and sort of will take over a situation and do everything if nothing’s All right. So you know there’s definitely a piece of me in like every character I’ve ever done, but there are some that I can relate to more than others for sure. Thank you so much.
