Things to Do with Kids in St. Augustine Florida

Things to Do with Kids in St. AugustineSt. Augustine is a great place to bring the kids. There is so much history to see and experience. The city has done an amazing job at preserving it to pass on to generations. There are 60 historic sites, attractions and museums.  Of these 15 are classified as “museums.” That’s a lot of history to take in. St. Augustine is what they call a “walking city” which means that you can easily enjoy the city by parking at your hotel or bead and breakfast and walking everywhere.

We visited lots of great places in St. Augustine but here is a list of some of our favorite places for kids in the area.

Marineland Dolphin Adventure

Marineland is a fantastic place located south of St. Augustine. This adventure is day trip because it’s a bit of a drive. Pack a lunch and visit the Fort Matanzas National Monument while you are in the area. Marineland has a Behind the Seas tour that shows and educates you on the Dolphines and Marinelands interesting history as a film studio for under water filming. You’ll get to see neat memorabilia and a great view of the dolphins in the tanks. Marineland sits right on the beach and if you book a kayaking tour with Ripple Effect, your admission to Marineland is free. Dolphin encounters are something truly amazing.

Pirate and Treasure Museum

Shiver me timbers, it’s time to set sail and experience the coolest place for kids to experience real Pirate artifacts including the Jolly Roger’s flag. The museum is completely interactive with touch screens and in app for iOS and Android devices. There is so much to see and discover, their collection of artifacts is fantastic.

Colonial Spanish Quarter and Spanish Quarter Museum

Walk through 3 centuries in a tour around the Colonial Spanish Quarter. Your tour guide will show you the ropes and even fire a musket and forge like a blacksmith. Climb the watch tower and see some of the highlights around the area. After immersing  yourself in history, pick one of the two fantastic restaurants on the property. English faire from the Bull and Crown Publik House or Spanish faire from Taberna del Caballo. We indulged in the Spanish cuisine and it was my personal favorite. Amazing flatbreads and Sangria.

St. Augustine Lighthouse

Climb 219 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the ocean, bay and all of St. Augustine. Take a tour to learn all about the history of the lighthouse and it’s keepers. You can even take a paranormal tour to learn about the ghosts that live in the lighthouse. They have a a museum on the property as well that you can explore.

The Hyppo

If there is one place you HAVE to stop at in St. Augustine, it needs to be The Hyppo or one of their many stands. These popsicles are amazing! Lots of fruit and lots of fun flavors you can’t find anywhere else. Save yourself enough time because picking out the one you’re going to try is tough. You may need to come back for a second visit.

Some other things to mention;

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not

They always have strange things to explore and I’ve never seen the same thing twice inside a Ripley’s.

Ghost Tours

You can’t experience St. Augustine to it’s fullest until you’ve gone on a ghost tour. It is after all the oldest continuously occupied city in the US. There are bond to be lots of ghosts lingering around. Some you can experience in your own hotel or bed and breakfast. We had an experience while staying at the St. Francis Inn, the oldest Inn in St. Augustine. Some are less scary than others but it all depends on the age of your child.

Have fun exploring St. Augustine Florida! We’ll discuss the amazing food up next.
