The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two Review: The Magic of Goldie Hawn as Mrs. Claus

The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two reunites Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn together again on screen for the first (second if you count the two-second scene at the end of The Christmas Chronicles) time since 1987 in the comedy Overboard. While viewers know how well Kurt Russell filled the shoes of Santa Claus, the spotlight shifts to Goldie Hawn and her portal of Mrs. Claus in the new Netflix film streaming November 25. 

Seeing this real-life Hollywood couple on screen together warms the heart. Just like the picture below, you can tell in every onscreen moment how much they love each other. Their chemistry brings Santa and Mrs. Claus to life in such a heartwarming way.

Most stories involving Santa Claus paint Mrs. Claus as the woman of the house to care for and support her husband. The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two showcases Mrs. Claus as a magical character, just like her husband. With mastery arts of potion making and her own twist of the wrist tricks up her sleeve. Her ability to turn healthy foods into desserts is uncanny. 

Donning her Christmas ornament style hair, Mrs. Claus is more than a woman behind the man that brings joy to all on Christmas morning. We get glimpses of her longing to be a mother to more than just elves. She has all the same magic and insight that Santa Claus has and utilizes it with Jack. Both of the children have lost a parent to death, and Santa and Mrs. Claus step up to teach them powerful messages about family and believing in yourself.

It’s been two years since Kate (Darby Camp) and her brother Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis) had to go on a wild adventure to save Christmas after they were determined to catch Santa on camera. Kate is now a cynical teenager and is reluctantly spending Christmas in Cancun with her mom’s new boyfriend (Tyrese Gibson, Fast & Furious) and his son Jack (Jahzir Bruno, The Witches). Kate is unwilling to accept the changes happening in her life and decides to head home to Boston, but a mysterious troublemaker has other plans. 

While the story mimics plenty of Christmas movies, it also offers a great lesson on family, especially ones with rebellious teens. We are introduced to an elf cursed to be a human named Belsnickel (Julian Dennison, Deadpool 2) that is really just a young elf acting out because he wants more attention. Which is really all Kate is doing.

Kate and Jack find themselves at the North Pole and are pulled into the Borealis barrier surrounding Santa’s (ahem, Mrs. Claus’s) Village. Here is where Kate and Jack meet Mrs. Claus after she saves them with a hot chocolate potion. Their magical adventure takes them to new heights and new time periods to help save Christmas again (hopefully for the last time, by Santa’s standards). 

While the children visit the North Pole, Mrs. Claus shares the Santa legends as a bedtime story when she pulls ‘The Christmas Chronicles’ from the self. The story mixes the traditional Christian legend of Saint Nicholas and the Star of Bethlehem with elves’ mythology. 

Back in 312 AD. Santa lived in Asia Minor. Today, it’s called Turkey.

Santa was known as Saint Nicholas. He was a bishop who discovered the joy of giving. Became something of a local hero. And his legend spread far and wide, eventually reaching the Forest Elves. In Elf lore there was a prophecy about a man who would be king of the elves, who would one day lead them to safety. He was the only one that could channel the Star of Bethlehem’s power. After that, they called him Santa Claus.

Chris Columbus and Matt Lieberman bring stories to life with memorable meanings and fantastical adventure and action. With titles like Harry Potter, Gremlins, Fantastic Four, Christmas with the Kranks, Percy Jackson, SCOOB, and The Addams Family under their belts, it’s no doubt that the adventure is there in The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two. Fans of the first film will love this new adventure and getting to meet Mrs. Claus in a new light.
