Learn about the Rescue Dogs from Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp the live-action airs on Disney+ but we have your sneak peek to get you excited before the big debut. The family will love sitting down together to enjoy this classic in a new way. Most of the live-action Disney adaptations do a healthy mix of classic songs and new options for fans to fall in love with, Lady and the Tramp gives much of the same. You’ll recognize some classic songs and enjoy some remixes with others. There are two new songs fans will enjoy.

The movie is stunning. I may be a bit biased but Lady and the Tramp is a Southern dream. Filmed in my home state of Georgia, this movie was filmed in the beautiful city of Savannah. You’ll be transported to 1909 and a simpler time devoid of the hustle and bustle we live now.

Jim Dear is the best husband around when it comes to epic Christmas presents. Darling opens her hatbox to find sweet Lady as a puppy. Get ready for all the Awwws and ooohs from your family. Especially if they love dogs as much as we do. Seeing that little American cocker spaniel with her floppy ears is almost too much cute. Disney used veteran animal trainer Mark Forbes to find the iconic characters.

Meet the rescue dogs from Lady and the Tramp

“Casting these dogs was one of the most stressful, but also one of the most moving parts, of making this movie,” says director Charlie Bean. “We needed dogs that best represented the animated versions, but we were also hoping to find rescued animals.”

Disney was on the search for dogs that were in need of being rescued or adoption. It’s a heart-warming detail that will make watching the movie with your family, all the more special.

“It is not only the right thing to do, but the message really aligns with the messages in this story,” says Forbes. “This is a story about discovering the meaning of family and, despite all the odds, finding your way back home to the ones that love you. We wanted to try and find homes for dogs that may otherwise have not
been adopted.”

For Tramp, the filmmakers wanted a dog with ears that can stand up, fold over, and give great expression. Monte was the perfect mutt for the job. Monte is a rescue that was found wandering the streets in New Mexico that made his way to Arizona before landing the part as Tramp. What makes this story more charming is that Forbes adopted Monte for himself after filming.

Monte has a back up to help him as well. His name is Billy Idol and he was a stray living in California. He was taken in by a shelter before being rescued by Forbes and his team. He looks exactly like Monte.

“Monte is not necessarily what you would call a tramp…he’s much more of a rascal,” says Forbes. “He’s a goof and he loves to chew on everything, but he’s also a lot of fun because everything with Monte is about ‘hey, let’s have fun doing this.’ It’s not about work with him, it’s always about play.”

For the role of Lady, a prized hunting Americal cocker spaniel named Rose from Texas was the girl for the job. Her owners were currently looking for a new home for her because she needed a family that could keep up with how active she is.

Rose, Monte, and their canine castmates trained for four months to prepare for their roles. The trainers lived with the dogs and worked with them very naturally, walking and playing with them together and getting them geared up for production.

There are a few little changes the film that fans may miss but the all-important spaghetti date unfolds exactly like the original film. It is still the most iconic aspect of the whole film.

Another knock out in the film is Peg voiced by Janelle Monae. I’ve always loved her spunky character and Monae captures her perfectly.

You won’t want to miss this movie on day one of the new Disney+ streaming service. It is a charming story.

In Disney+’s “Lady and the Tramp,” a timeless retelling of the 1955 animated classic, a pampered house dog and a tough but lovable stray embark on an unexpected adventure and, despite their differences, grow closer and come to understand the value of home. Life is good for Lady, an overachieving American Cocker Spaniel who resides in an upscale suburban neighborhood. Her owners, Jim Dear and Darling, spoil her daily and her neighbors, Jock, an outspoken Scottish Terrier and Trusty, a world-weary Bloodhound, are always within barking distance. But when a baby enters the picture, Lady is no longer the center of attention, and the arrival of cat-loving Aunt Sarah only complicates matters. Lady soon finds herself alone on the streets in an unwelcoming part of town. Fortunately, Tramp steps in, and the streetwise mongrel is quick to teach her the ways of the world. Before long, the prim and proper purebred and the fast-talking mutt are partaking in moonlight strolls in the park and romantic spaghetti dinners by candlelight. Tramp savors the independence of a world without leashes or fences alongside his roguish friends Peg and Bull, but Lady misses the comfort and safety of a family,
and soon both must decide where – and with whom – they belong. A heartwarming romantic adventure that
seamlessly combines live-action and photorealistic animation, “Lady and the Tramp” stars: Tessa Thompson as
the voice of Lady and Justin Theroux as the voice of Tramp; Kiersey Clemons as Darling; Thomas Mann as Jim
Dear; Janelle Monáe as the voice of Peg; Yvette Nicole Brown as Aunt Sarah; and Sam Elliott as the voice of
Trusty. The film is directed by Charlie Bean from a screenplay by Andrew Bujalski and Kari Granlund, and is produced by Brigham Taylor with Diane L. Sabatini serving as executive producer.

“Lady and the Tramp” premieres on November 12, 2019, streaming only on Disney+.
